A legendary coffee, with only 1% of it circulating worldwide!
Experience the flavor and aroma of "Liberica," one of the three main original coffee species!

The Liberica species possesses a mysterious aroma and umami unlike any other coffee, reminiscent of berries, cassis, ripe mango, apple, yuzu, and other fruits. As it cools, a refreshing flavor like Darjeeling tea emerges.

Its country of origin is the Republic of Liberia on the west coast of Africa. Currently, it is produced in Liberia, the Philippines, Malaysia, and other countries, but most of it is consumed domestically and rarely exported.

The Liberica coffee directly imported by 0566 Coffee Factory comes from the Republic of Uganda in East Africa. It is adjacent to Lake Victoria, where the Nile River begins, and is located on the East African plateau, giving it an average altitude of 1100m, an environment suitable for coffee production.

Liberica, one of the three main original coffee species

There are three main original coffee species: Arabica, Canephora Robusta, and Liberica. Arabica is the coffee we drink daily, and Canephora Robusta is a low-priced species used in instant coffee and canned coffee, which is also familiar to us.

In contrast, Liberica is an extremely rare coffee, with only 1% said to be distributed worldwide and not available in the general market. Because it is consumed in the producing countries, only 1% of Liberica is said to be distributed globally.

Although people in the coffee industry know the name Liberica, very few have actually tasted it. It is truly a legendary coffee.

Why did rare Liberica come to 0566 Coffee Factory?

Various professionals and individuals often visit 0566 Coffee Factory, leading to new interactions. UNHCR, a UN organization that supports refugees, was a frequent visitor. Among them, Jane, a Ugandan woman who is herself a refugee and a refugee activist, visited the store. During our conversation, Jane casually mentioned:

"My friend works at a coffee farm in Uganda." "Do you want Ugandan coffee?" Although I didn't expect much, I decided to have a sample of green beans sent over.

Jane, having been a refugee herself, strongly desires to support Uganda, but we couldn't purchase something that wasn't delicious... However, when it arrived, I was surprised! The document attached to the green coffee beans stated "LIBERICA." Suddenly, Liberica, which is said to have only a 1% distribution worldwide, appeared right before my eyes.

Looking at the shape of the green beans, they were pointed and plump, thick in a way unlike any other coffee. And when I received images of the Liberica tree, its leaves were significantly larger than Arabica, and the tree itself was taller. It was truly authentic Liberica! I immediately roasted it and prepared to taste Liberica for the first time...

Surprised by the intense aroma, I took a sip... "Delicious!" Not just delicious, but a complex fruitiness, a unique aroma that escapes through the nose, and layers of richness I had never experienced before!

It was truly an exceptional flavor and aroma, a mysterious and exquisite coffee unlike any other. Amazing! Is this Liberica...?

But why is Liberica from Uganda so special and delicious? I asked William, the import manager and our contact in Uganda.

William says, "It is blessed with high altitude, good soil, and a dry climate." Uganda is a naturally rich and beautiful country with a favorable environment. Although often regarded as a "low-grade species," Liberica had transformed into an incredibly exquisite specialty coffee in Uganda.

The biggest question was why such a special and delicious coffee had remained unknown. I asked William again.

It was shocking. To circulate it worldwide, it had been blended and sold with the more well-known "Canephora Robusta" species. In other words, Liberica was being sold as Robusta, effectively making it as if it didn't even exist. That's why it had remained unknown, dormant in Uganda.

Uganda is one of the poorest countries in Africa. The poverty rate is high, and labor wages are surprisingly low compared to developed countries. Ugandan coffee is produced by "farmers" rather than "plantations," and they often face very harsh living conditions.

This time, 0566 Coffee Factory successfully imported Liberica directly, bypassing intermediaries. In reality, direct import by a roaster carries risks. However, we want to support the coffee farmers as much as possible.Where there is coffee, there are smiles. This must also apply to the producers. We want to continue this partnership as a testament to our respect for coffee producers, to "bring smiles to producers" and "prosperity to Liberica farmers."
